Meet Deringer:
Deringer is a 6-7 year old large male at about 70 lbs. He has the "large male" GSP personality to match! He is a lover and a snuggler and bit of a goof ball. Deringer loves to give kisses and lay on your lap if you will let him. He loves to be still and snuggle with you, but also enjoys jogging with you and getting some exercise. He can be a very good lazy Sunday afternoon housemate, but he does need to get some good exercise during the week.
Deringer is good with other large dogs. He likes to run with his dog buddies and snuggle with them on dog beds, but he doesn't necessarily like to wrestle, so would probably do best with another adult dog. Puppies and overly exuberant dogs would likely be something he would get used to, but I don't think he would enjoy. Deringer did bond very strongly with another foster female in his home that has been adopted and he is currently good buddies with his male foster brother. Deringer does like having another canine bond, so we would prefer for him to have a home where he isn't the only dog. Deringer is not good with cats and probably not appropriate for living with small dogs.
Deringer loves to play fetch. He enjoys jogging (although he does pull) - while jogging Deringer has a funny style which is inline with his personality. He is either sprinting full speed or stopping, which makes for an exciting jogging buddy. Deringer's foster parents joke that he has only two speeds - full speed or none at all. After exercising, Deringer will stick his entire face into the water bowl, which makes for good entertainment but also a big mess! Deringer also likes to dunk himself in the pool. He doesn't like to swim, but he does like to get in and lay down on the first step of the pool.
Deringer is currently at a foster with a dog door and he uses that successfully with no accidents in the home. Deringer is not currently crated at his foster home. He will go into a crate willingly but will often salivate excessively in a crate and can have a big puddle when his foster parents return home. While Deringer is left unsupervised at his foster home, he is good 98% of the time, but sometimes when he has not gotten enough exercise he will pull towels or rugs out in to the yard and play with them. He has also been known to pull out a dog bed and tear it up in the yard - what fun! :)
Deringer is now contained in the yard with a 6 foot privacy fence. While his foster sister was here, she would leave the yard and encourage Deringer to join her (which he is capable of doing either by going over or under the fence) - however, without his partner in crime now, he does not show any interest in leaving the yard.
For those interested in having their new GSP join them on the couch or the bed, Deringer is not a good match for you - Deringer sometimes forgets his place in the pecking order of the home and this behavior occurs when he is allowed on a bed or couch and begins to guard "his" space. For this same reason, Deringer will not be adopted to a home with young kids. While he is very comfortable in his own home, Deringer can be somewhat nervous is other situations and his adopter will need to be conscious of this and careful to introduce Deringer slowly to new situations, people and dogs.
Deringer is an awesome, lovable big guy that will be a great dog for a home looking for a big GSP to hug!
